Frequently Asked Questions

Does BackHike work without internet?

Yes. BackHike uses your phone's GPS satellite — no data connection needed. Your position is recorded every 2 minutes and stored locally. Perfect for jungle treks in Malaysia where there's no signal.

How does the overdue alert work?

Set your estimated return time (ETA) before you start. If you don't check out by that time, BackHike automatically sends SMS alerts with your last GPS location to your emergency contacts.

Does SOS use data or my phone credit?

SOS uses your phone's native SMS and call function — your own credit. No server or internet needed. It calls 999 (Malaysia emergency), sends SMS with GPS to contacts, and opens WhatsApp.

What trails are supported?

BackHike includes a directory of popular Malaysian trails — Gunung Kinabalu, Gunung Tahan, Bukit Broga, Gunung Datuk, Gunung Nuang, and more. You can also start a hike at any location.

Is the premium a subscription?

No. Premium is a one-time purchase of RM22.90. Pay once, unlock forever. No recurring charges. Includes group tracking, family live link, offline maps, and no ads.

Can my family track me without installing the app?

Yes. Family Live Link generates a web URL that you share via WhatsApp. Your family can see your live location, battery level, and ETA from any browser — no app install required.

What happens if I go missing?

If you don't check out by your ETA, your emergency contacts are alerted with your last known GPS coordinates. Your selfie check-in photo helps rescue teams identify you and know where you started.

Is BackHike free?

Yes. Core safety features (check-in, GPS tracking, overdue alert, SOS) are completely free. Premium (RM22.90 one-time) adds group tracking, live link, offline maps, and removes ads.

Hiking Safety Guide Malaysia

Essential tips before you hit the trail

Before You Hike

Always inform someone of your plan. Set your ETA. Bring enough water (2-3L for 4 hours). Check weather forecast. Start early — most Malaysian trails should be done by 4pm.

What To Bring

Headlamp, whistle, first aid kit, rain poncho, extra battery/power bank, dry food, trail map or offline GPS. Wear proper hiking shoes — not slippers.

If You're Lost

STOP — Sit, Think, Observe, Plan. Don't panic. Stay where you are. Use SOS to call 999. Blow your whistle in sets of 3. If you have BackHike, your contacts already have your last GPS location.

Malaysia Emergency Numbers

999 — Police/Ambulance/Fire. 112 — Universal Emergency. BOMBA Rescue — 994. BackHike SOS calls 999 automatically with your GPS coordinates.

Popular Trails

Gunung Kinabalu (4,095m), Gunung Tahan (2,187m), Gunung Nuang, Bukit Broga, Gunung Datuk, Gunung Lambak, Taman Negara, Mossy Forest Cameron Highlands.

Weather & Terrain

Malaysian jungle is tropical — expect rain anytime. Trails get slippery. Leeches are common below 1,000m. Above 1,500m can drop to 10°C at night. Plan accordingly.
